Please join us for this upcoming Sunday Forum featuring author and historian Connie Young Yu exploring the history of Chinese immigrants in the Bay Area, including stories about the experiences of her own family. Connie will review a long history of anti-Asian laws and actions, the way immigrants responded to these efforts and repeatedly made their case in the American courts, and also discuss a few brave White people who stood up for and helped them in these struggles. As we seek as a community of faith to tell ever truer stories about who we are and where we come from, this gathering will undoubtedly offer both education and inspiration as we learn more about our local history, ourselves, and our neighbors, past and present.
Connie Young Yu is a writer and independent historian dedicated to addressing Asian American issues for half a century. As an activist, she helped to save the Angel Island immigration barracks from demolition. She is the author of Chinatown, San Jose, USA, published by History/San Jose, co-editor of Voices from the Railroad: Stories by Descendants of Chinese Railroad Workers, and co-author of Hakone Estate and Gardens. Her writings have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She is board member emeritus of the Chinese Historical Society of America and a trustee of Hakone Foundation.
