Schola Cantorum Presents: I Was Glad!

Schola Cantorum is an unique choral arts organization with multiple community programs whose members include parishioners Marie Alberry-Hawkins, Jo Darius, and Charles Thompson and Ventana School teacher Julie Kelsey. Their first concert of the season will be on Sunday, October 29 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto. All are welcome!

This moving and uplifting presentation of Psalm settings will take listeners on an emotional journey, with a message as relevant today as the day the Psalms were written. Leonard Bernstein’s exquisite choral classic, Chichester Psalms, will be sung in Hebrew and includes organ, harp, percussion, and boy treble. Bernstein described the music as “forthright, songful, rhythmic and youthful.” The ten Psalms in Shawn Kirchner’s melodious and inspiring Songs of Ascent, presented here in the premier performance of its organ and harp arrangement, take us “from estrangement to reconciliation, dispersal to reunion, and anticipation to culmination.” The final movement of both works includes the text from Psalm 133, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.”
